Where Are You From?

Where we come from and how we are raised leaves a lasting mark on the way we see the world. Our childhood, culture, traditions and environment become the foundation of our identity, influencing the way we communicate, connect with others and understand life itself. The streets we grow up in, the values we learn at home and the people around us during our early years shape much of who we become. Yet as time passes, life also teaches us that identity is not something fixed forever. It evolves continuously through experiences, challenges, relationships and the places that unexpectedly become part of our story.

After spending the last 23 years building a life, relationships and businesses on the Costa del Sol, I have realised this more deeply than ever. Living in such an international environment changes the way you see people and the world around you. Every day brings new conversations, cultures, perspectives and stories. You begin to understand that no matter where someone comes from, every person carries invisible experiences that have shaped their journey — moments of sacrifice, ambition, courage, uncertainty, resilience and hope.

One of the most beautiful aspects of living among people from all over the world is the perspective it gives you. It teaches humility because you realise there is never only one correct way of thinking, living or understanding life. Different cultures approach family, work, communication, success and happiness in different ways, yet each carries wisdom and meaning rooted in generations of experience. The more you listen, the more you learn that diversity is not something that separates us, but something that enriches us.

Behind every accent is a story. Behind every move to another country is often a leap of faith. Many people leave behind familiarity, comfort and loved ones in search of opportunity, freedom, stability or simply a better future for themselves and their families. Some arrive with dreams, others with uncertainty, but most share a common desire: to belong, to grow and to create a meaningful life. Despite our differences in language, culture or background, human beings are often searching for the same things — connection, independence, peace, purpose and happiness.

Living and working in an international community has also taught me that values and intentions can sometimes be misunderstood through different cultural lenses. What feels natural or respectful in one culture may be interpreted completely differently in another. Communication styles vary. Expectations vary. Emotional expression varies. In today’s world, where people from different backgrounds interact more than ever before, understanding and empathy become essential qualities.

Over time, I have learned that listening is one of the most valuable skills we can develop. Not listening simply to respond, but listening to genuinely understand another person’s perspective and experience. When we approach people with curiosity instead of judgement, barriers begin to disappear. We stop seeing people only through labels, nationalities or stereotypes and begin seeing them as individuals with unique journeys and stories worth understanding.

One belief that has only grown stronger for me over the years is that people always come first. Business, ambition and success all have their place, but without human connection they lose much of their meaning. Respect for every culture, lifestyle and personal journey is fundamental in a world that is increasingly connected yet often emotionally disconnected. We may not always agree with one another, but mutual respect allows people from completely different backgrounds to coexist, collaborate and grow together.

The Costa del Sol itself reflects this idea beautifully. It is a place where cultures meet daily — where people from across Europe and beyond build homes, friendships, businesses and communities together. Living in this environment constantly reminds you that identity can become something much broader than nationality alone. Home is no longer only the place you were born. Sometimes home becomes the place where you feel understood, accepted and inspired to grow.

Another important lesson life teaches us is that the people we meet can shape us just as much as the places we come from. Certain conversations stay with us forever. Some friendships change the direction of our lives. Some individuals inspire us to think differently, dream bigger or become kinder versions of ourselves. Human connection has a quiet but extraordinary power to transform us over time.

This is why continuing to connect with others matters so much. Through sharing experiences, ideas and perspectives, we create deeper understanding and stronger communities. In a world where division and misunderstanding can easily grow, genuine connection becomes more valuable than ever. Every act of empathy, encouragement and openness contributes to building a more human and compassionate society.

Perhaps the question “Where are you from?” is not only about geography. Maybe it is also about the experiences that shaped you, the people who influenced you, the struggles you overcame and the values you chose to carry with you through life. Identity is not simply inherited; it is continuously created through everything we live, learn and share with others.

Home can exist in more than one place. Identity can be built across different cultures, languages and experiences. And perhaps one of the greatest privileges in life is having the opportunity to continue evolving through the people we meet along the way.

In the end, what matters most is not only where we started, but how we continue to grow, connect and contribute to the lives of others. Because when we open ourselves to understanding different people and perspectives, we do not only expand our view of the world — we expand ourselves as human beings.
